Debating
Last
Tuesday both teams debated each other in the final round of the Premier’s
Debating Challenge. The topic was that
weekend sport should be compulsory for students. Wideview B was the
affirmative and beat Wideview A in a close debate. It was great to see how far
they have all come in their debating.
Last
Monday Wideview B had their third debate in the Premier’s Debating Challenge
against Waitara A. The Wideview team of Rebecca, Julie, Ben and Olivia made
huge improvements from their first debate but unfortunately this was not quite
enough to beat the Waitara team. The topic for this debate was parents should ban children from social
networking sites and Wideview had the affirmative. I was very proud of the
effort by the team who have been working hard and improving their skills and
confidence significantly.
On
Tuesday 11th August the Wideview A team of Ashleigh, Arielle,
Charlotte and Leonie debated against Hornsby North A. The topic for the debate
was that Year 5 and 6 children should do
30 minutes of chores each day. Wideview had the affirmative and prepared a
strong case. However the Hornsby North team came up with a clever tactic in
arguing that children should do more
than 30 minutes of chores each day. This surprised our team (and the audience)
and it took them a while to adjust. The Wideview team were stronger speakers
but learnt a valuable lesson in being flexible and responding to unexpected
strategies.
Overall
it has been satisfying seeing how the members of the teams have grown in
confidence and developed their debating skills over the course of the
competition. They have shown dedication in coming along to the practices in the
mornings and some lunchtimes and I commend them for that. They were always
proud ambassadors for our school.

From the P & C….
Our
August meeting was held last week, with local State member Judy Hopwood MP
visiting. Her discussion covered the proposed changes to advertised League
Tables and the restructure of Special Education classes and support. We
informed Mrs Hopwood of the public works to occur in our school over the next
few months.
Finally
our Rides Day occurred last weekend and we
couldn’t have asked for better weather. A big thank-you to our Fete
Co-ordinators Sharon Bradford and Juliette Kaur and all those parents who once
again volunteered to help. A BIG THANK YOU TO
Don’t
forget the Shopping Tour is on Saturday 19th
September; all monies need to be in by this Friday 28th to ensure
your seat on the bus. Cost is $37 per head and can be left in an envelope at
the office.
Over
our last few meetings the issue of illegal parking and
u-turns during school drop-off and pick up has been raised. Please do
not double park and abide by the signage outside the school to ensure the
safety of our children.
Also
parents lining up to make a u-turn in

before the elections, so please attend our next meeting in September. More
