Wideview Hits the Opera House!

Last Friday the Recorder Group, Mrs McNaught and Mr Harpur headed off to the Sydney Opera House for the Mimosa Music Festival. This is a music festival that showcases the amazing musical talents of public school students from across the state. 19 Wideview students were amongst the 700 recorders that played alongside some amazing orchestras in the main hall of the Opera House. The quality of the music from all the performers was extremely impressive. Thanks to Mrs McNaught for teaching and supporting our recorder group at Wideview School, and well done to the children that performed.

Malcolm Harpur

During the trip to the Opera House the kids were so excited and the enthusiasm from the children and teachers and parents who went along was fabulous.  While on the Ferry returning from the Aquarium to the Opera House a Gentleman asked which school we were from and during the discussion said we as a school should be so proud of our group as the children were delightful and a pleasure to be around.  The children were well behaved and their manners lovely. I, as a parent helper, was very proud of them all.
Thank you Mrs McNaught and Mr Harpur for a wonderful experience.

Dear Wideview Families,

A few reminders as the term comes to a close. At the beginning of next term, I will be taking long service leave to go to a reunion of teachers that I taught with in Malaysia. Terry McKinnon will be relieving in my place while I am away.

Reports will be out sometime next week and I hope there are not too many surprises and hope that parents made use of the available time last term to speak with your child’s teacher at organised interviews.

It was brought to my attention this week by a concerned parent, that students were coming to school with their hair not tied back. While there is no mandatory rule on how children should wear their hair, tying up does help to prevent the spread of head lice. I thought it might be a timely reminder to look at the Wideview Community “Uniform Policy”.

Warm regards,

Cherie Bourke

Wideview Principal

Debating

Yesterday Wideview A had their second debate in the Premier’s Debating Challenge against Waitara A. It was an extremely high quality debate and the Wideview team of Leonie, Arielle, Ashleigh and Charlotte lost in what was a difficult decision for the adjudicator. The topic for this debate was that mobile phones are more of a nuisance than a convenience and Wideview had the negative. A fantastic effort by the girls who have been improving their skills significantly.

Next Monday at 10.30am Wideview B will be taking on Hornsby North A in their second round debate in the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Then on Tuesday at 10.15am in the Hornsby/ Hills District debating competition we have our second debate against Normanhurst Public School. The topic is we should ban junk food advertisements from Australian television. Wideview is taking the affirmative. Both debates will be in the school hall and parents are more than welcome to attend.

Terry McKinnon

WIDEVIEW UNIFORM POLICY

At Wideview Public School, it is school policy that students wear school uniform. This policy, as detailed below was determined by the school parent bodies and follows the guidelines of the Department of Education and Training’s memoranda on the wearing of school uniforms.

The uniform items listed below are available from the school’s Clothing Pool. The Clothing Pool also have a wide range of quality second-hand uniform items and school hats, bags, and sports uniforms can also be purchased.  The Clothing Pool is open each Thursday from 8.15am to 9.30am

Girls’ summer uniform

·   Blue and white checked tunic, with white collar and inverted pleat at front.

·   Optional royal blue shorts to be worn with a blue shirt.

·   Black school shoes

·   White socks                                        Boys Summer Uniform

·   Short sleeved mid blue shirt

·   Grey boxer shorts

·   Black school shoes

·   Grey socks (with school colours if available)

Girls’ Winter uniform

·   Royal blue plaid A-line tunic

·   Mid blue long sleeved shirt or light blue skivvy

·   Black school shoes

·   Mid blue socks or navy tights

·   Optional school tie

Boys’ Winter uniform

·   Mid blue long-sleeved shirt or light blue skivvy

·   Grey long/short trousers

·   Black school shoes

·   Grey socks (with school colours if available)

·   Optional school tie

For both boys and girls

·    Royal blue track-suits are permitted to be worn during winter. However, track pants are for in school use only. They are NOT to be worn on excursions, for school photos or other special occasions.

·    Royal blue zip front fleecy jacket printed with school emblem

·    Royal blue v-necked fleecy jumper printed with school emblem

·    Royal blue round necked fleecy sloppy joe printed with school emblem

·    Royal blue sports shorts

School Hats

Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. The major cause of common skin cancers is cumulative, unprotected exposure to the sun, with research indicating that most skin cancers occur during childhood and adolescence. As a means of encouraging our students to practise preventative over-exposure to the sun measures, Wideview Public School implements a “No Hat – Play in the Shade Policy”. Students are required to wear sun-safe school hats, which are designed to protect the face and neck.

School hats are available from the clothing pool and are part of the school uniform. Students may choose either a navy blue, broad brim or navy blue legionnaires style hat. Non-school hats are not to be worn except in an emergency, and will NOT be able to be worn out of the school, e.g, on excursions, sporting events, etc.

Sports uniform

Our sports uniform is a house-coloured T-shirt with royal blue shorts for boys, and a royal blue netball or wrap-around skirt for girls. Girls may choose to wear the unisex shorts that are available from the clothing pool.  White anklet (not sports) socks and white sandshoes or joggers are to be worn.

School Uniforms and Excursions

Whilst track suits have been made available to children for use in the school grounds, this is not the “official” school uniform for excursions.  When children are representing their school, unless stated otherwise, full school uniform is required– this includes the correct school hat and black shoes (NOT joggers or skate shoes).

The following useful school items are available from the clothing pool

·    Library bags - A draw string bag big enough to hold large books.

·    Playlunch bags (Kindergarten only) - A small drawstring bag labelled with child’s name to put playlunch in.

·    School bags - The school has royal blue school back packs printed with school emblem.

·    Name tags - Either iron on or sew on. It is advisable that you have all your child’s clothing and belongings clearly labelled to minimise loss.

Student Assistance Scheme

The school is provided with an annual Government Grant, the money to be allocated to parents who may be in need of financial assistance. This money can be provided to families for a wide variety of purposes, including school uniform. Inquiries should be directed personally to the principal.

Implementation of the School Uniform Policy

In accordance with the guidelines of the Department of Education and Training’s policy on the wearing of school uniform, the following principles will be implemented:

·   It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that their children are dressed in the appropriate school uniform and that all items are labelled.

·   Consistent non-conformity to the wearing of uniform will result in parents being notified of:

o   the school requirements

o   how the school can assist should the need arise

o   putting strategies in place to resolve issue.

·   Full school uniform will be worn on excursions unless specifically stated in a note to the parents.

·   The above implementation procedures will take into account the economic, personal, social and cultural factors affecting students and their families.

·   In the interests of children’s safety, the wearing of jewellery such as earrings, bangles, bracelets and necklaces is discouraged.

·   The changeover from one season’s uniform to the other will be a decision left to the discretion of the Principal.

Good luck to all dancers who will be performing in the Sydney North Schools Dance Festival at the Glen Street Theatre over the next week. Wideview will be represented in 7 different shows over the week! The dress rehearsal was fantastic and we are looking forward to watching the boys and girls perform.

In Term 3 all dancers will be performing in the McDonald’s Performing Arts Challenge. This year this eisteddfod will not be held at the Opera house as it has been in previous years. Instead it will be at the University of NSW - Kensington. Wideview will be performing in this event on Sunday 9th August. All dancers will need to arrive by parent transport by 9am. There will be more information sent home soon.

From the P & C….

Once again a great turn out to our most recent P & C meeting. It is great to see so many interested parents. Some of you may have seen the new exercise equipment being installed on the oval near the cricket pitch. This equipment was purchased using fundraising monies from the P & C’s effort last year. We would like to thank Jan Howes for all her hard work in organising the purchase and installation of the equipment.

Once again our Rides Day has been postponed due to bad weather and our Fete Co-ordinators are currently organising with the school and amusement company to reschedule for Sunday 23rd August.

Another activity that has been scheduled is a shopping tour. Come and enjoy a day out of shopping till you drop. The tour is on Saturday 19th September – More information and tickets sales will be featured in future newsletters next term.

Get a group together of friends and have some fun. Organise a fundraising venture or event to benefit our school, we have some ideas or you could suggest your own. These include a night of entertainment for adults, trivia, outdoor movies and much more. Please contact us for more information.

Finally as part of P & C’s wish list we are looking at adding special lighting to the hall. Before we can move forward on this we need an electrician to verify which of the current lights are in working order. So if you are one or know an electrician that is willing to donate some time please contact Virginia 9456 4595 or wideviewpandc@gmail.com.au .

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 19th August – All Welcome.
