From the P&C….
Thanks
to those families who came along last Saturday night to the ‘Wideview Welcome’. About 25 families enjoyed a very pleasant
night, getting to know new parents a little better, and catching up with
friends.
Thanks especially to teachers Mr Harpur and
Mrs Norman for coming to school even on your day off! We were ‘wired for sound’ and ‘skipped with
happiness’ thanks to you! And that
cricket game in the dark was certainly a fun challenge….
Our
next meeting for the year is next Wednesday 18th March, at
7.30pm in the staffroom.
Among other things, we’ll be discussing fundraising targets and ideas
for the year, so please feel free to come along and have your say. Last meeting it was wonderful to see so many
new faces - it will be great to see you again.
Keep
your eye out elsewhere in this newsletter for details of our next fundraiser – Hot Cross Buns through Baker’s
Delight. Yum!!

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
2009
We are extremely proud to announce that there
has been a 50% increase in our participant numbers this year, compared
with last year’s statistics. Students are very keen about setting themselves
goals to achieve in this exciting personal challenge that has many positive
outcomes for all participants.
The online reading records are now
operational and have proven to be very user friendly. Students simply logon to
their portal (http.//portal.det.nsw.edu.au)
using their username and password
assigned to them at school. On the
KIDSPACE page, click onto the link to the Premier’s Reading Challenge. On the top left hand side of this
page, click on Student Reading Records.
A student is formally registered as soon as they log on and begin their reading
record.
Enter title (or part thereof) and a drop down
menu will appear, from which you select the actual book that has been read.
Click on Add and other details such as
author and book ID will then
automatically appear on the reading record list.
Helpful hint :
If a title begins with “a” or “the” it is preferable to start typing at the next word in the
title.
Please note that Kindergarten students will be given their username and passwords at
the end of this term, so it is a good idea to keep a hard copy at home of the
books borrowed and read until they can be entered online. There is no cut off date for registration
so the students in Kinder will not be disadvantaged.
Please do not hesitate to call me at school
on 94561655 if you require further assistance.
Regards,
Chris Price Teacher Librarian
Swimming
Congratulations
to all of our swimmers who went to the Zone Carnival on Wednesday. We finished
third overall which is a fantastic result for our school. Our senior girls
relay team won and our junior boys relay team came second and both of these
teams will go through to the area carnival at Homebush. All students competed to
the best of their ability and were proud ambassadors for the school. There were
also some outstanding individual performances but I was most impressed by how
the children supported each other. A special note of congratulations goes to
the following students who will all be going to the Area Carnival at the Sydney
Swimming Centre at Homebush on Monday 31st March: Michael Paterson,
Ryan Tullia, Alec Arnold, Mason Francis, Nicholas Frost, Tara Peirce, Sally
Loustau, Emma Frost and Savannah Paterson. We wish them luck.
I
would like to thank all of our parents for their help at the Zone. In
particular, thanks must go to Robyn Paterson who did a wonderful job as our
team manager.
I
would like to also take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who helped
at our school swimming carnival at Hornsby. Your willingness to volunteer and
help made the day go smoothly and it is very much appreciated.
Terry
McKinnon
On Wednesday 4th
March, we had the pleasure of watching 34 of our school students swim at the
zone swimming carnival at West Pymble Pool. What an exciting day!
Every one of our swimmers
did the school proud and swam their hardest to see Wideview placed 3rd
over all, which I don’t think has happened in a long time, if at all.
The kids behaved really
well and were a credit to themselves and our school and we are very proud of
all their efforts: Thankyou kids.
Well done and
congratulations to those who now go ahead to compete at area, at Sydney Aquatic
Centre, Homebush on Monday 30th.
Thankyou also to all the
parents who came to support their children and the school and who helped to
make sure the kids didn’t miss the call for their swims.
We had a great day watching
our great kids, they are all fantastic!

THE EDUCATION TAX REFUND – GET 50% BACK
Under
the new Education Tax Refund, paints and others who are eligible can now claim
50% of their eligible education expenses up to $750 for primary students and
$1500 for secondary students.
This
means you could receive a refund each year of up to $375 for each primary and
$750 for each secondary school student in your care.
Are
you eligible?
To be eligible you must have received Family Tax
Benefit Part A for each child whose education expenses you wish to claim. You can also claim the Education Tax Refund
if you were stopped from receiving family Tax Benefit Part A because your child
received any of the following: Youth
Allowance (student) aged 18; Disability Support Pension; ABSTUDY; the Veterans’
Children Education Scheme; the Student financial Supplement Scheme; a scheme
under s258 of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004; an
Australian Postgraduate Award.
Independent students are also eligible to claim.
What
can you claim?
You can claim the purchase, lease, hire or
hire-purchase costs, repairs and running costs of:
·
Laptops, home computers and associated costs – for example,
internet and paper;
·
Educational software, printers, USB flash drives,
disability aids to assist in the use of computer equipment for students with
special needs;
·
Stationery and art supplies
·
School textbooks and associated learning materials
·
Trade tools and safety equipment for secondary
school trade courses.
Some of the expenses you cannot claim include
school fees or the cost of school uniforms, school excursions or travel to and
from school, musical instruments or sporting equipment, clothing or footwear.
For a more comprehensive list visit www.educationtaxrefund.gov.au
When
can you claim?
You can claim your education expenses in your 2009
tax return. If you do not have to lodge
a tax return, you will be able to lodge a separate claim with the Tax Office
from 1 July 2009.
Remember,
you need to keep all receipts for expenses you claim.
If your education expenses in one year are more
than the claim limit for your children, you can add the excess to your
education expenses for the following year.
For more information: visit www.educationtaxrefund.gov.au
or phone the Tax Office on 13 28 61
PLEASE NOTE (from the school): Ensure you retain all receipts issued by the
school for the above purposes as we cannot reissue receipts.
